Colour and texture meet on an outfit by the textile design partnership, Georgina von Etzdorf. Golden sunbursts are embroidered onto a woollen gauze vest and devoré velvet is used to give a shadowy, raised pattern to a bias-cut skirt. Foliage and flower motifs, evoking the atmosphere of rural England, typify the work of a company that is inspired by natural imagery. In 1981 Georgina von Etzdorf entered into a partnership with two art school contemporaries: Martin Simcock and Jonathan Docherty. The hand-printing method they developed involves screen-printing supplemented by hand-applied paint strokes, a process that lends individuality to each garment. The designer's contribution to fashion has been to stimulate the use of handmade fabrics, especially for scarves. Velvet and silk is printed with abstract shafts and blocks of colour, the result being a wearable piece of conceptual textile design.
