DOMINGUEZ Adolfo (Designer)

Adolfo Dominguez is Spanish's answer to Giorgio Armani, growing his label from the beginnings of his small tailoring business. In the 1980s he was famously called "King of the Wrinklies" for his tailored but unpressed, crinkled suits for men; during this time he also designed the uniforms for the TV series Miami Vice. Today he has a much sleeker image, still maintaining, like Armani, a use of fabrics that direct his work and lend themselves to a simpler, softer look. These visual preoccupations come from the fact that Dominguez is not a traditionally trained designer, but a tailor, originally studying cinematography in Paris before returning to his father's drapery shop in northern Spain. He launched his first men's ready-to-wear collection in Madrid in 1982, and followed it with womenswear in 1992. In 2001 he entered the American market, opening a boutique in Miami _ one of many, in what has become a successful retail business worldwide.

Also look up for Armani, Marant, Matsuda, Del Pozo
