ETRO Gimmo (Textile designer)

This family group of outfitted wildlife illustrates the haute bohemian spirit of the Italian label Etro. Capturing its hallmark jewel colours and rich textiles, this portrait, entitled "Animen", portrays curious hybrids of man and animal. The family-run company was set up by patriarch Gimmo Etro in 1968. Returning from his travels with fabrics from the Far East and North Africa, he replicated these designs onto sumptuous cashmere, silk and linen. These he supplied to top couture houses and designers Armani, Mugler and Lacroix, earning himself the title of "Grand Man of Italian Textiles". Joined by his offspring, he launched his menswear collection in the 1980s, deploying his signature paisley motif and vivid velvets as lining on tweed coats, bright flashes on collars and cuffs, and even in an all-over paisley suit for David Bowie. The brand remains in the Etro family with all four of Gimmo Etro's children handling various aspects of the business today.

Also look up for Armani, Ascher, Benetton, Kenzo, Lacroix
