DUFF GORDON Lady (Lucile) (Designer)

Lucile, who started out in 1890 by dressmaking for her friends, opened her own fashion house in 1891. Her marriage to Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon in 1900 catapulted her into designing for the upper echelons of international society, with branches in New York (1909), Chicago (1911) and Paris (1911). Like the Callot Soeurs, she designed romantic dresses made of silk and lace. Her speciality was picturesque tea gowns in pastel shades worn with mild corsetry, the fitting of which is being conducted here. Like her countryman Charles Frederick Worth, she held fashion shows for her clients. Like Poiret, she was an innovator, designing clothes that were startling for the time _ such as draped skirts that revealed the legs. She was also involved in the entertainment wold, designing costumes that became popular fashion, such as those for Lily Elsie, star of The Merry Widow (1934). Her other clients included the dancer Irene Castle and actress Sarah Bernhardt.

Also look up for Boué, Callot, Dinnigan, Molyneux, Poiret, Worth
